Keyboarding skills are very important. I begin teaching keyboarding in kindergarten by having students find different keys. First graders must begin using the correct hands for each side of the keyboard. Second grade continues but begins to place their fingers on the home row. Third graders build even more on those skills by starting to use reaches. So instead of taking their whole had off the keyboard they only move the finger they need. By fourth grade I expect to see them keeping their hands in place and begin to memorize key placement so they don't have to look down so much. Then by fifth grade students use a cover to cover their keyboard which reinforces the ability to not look at their hands. I have many keyboarding websites I like to use but my favorite is Dance Mat Typing. If you are looking for something for your child to do besides just playing games have them practice their keyboarding!
Talent show practice will be on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30. Students are only allowed to stay if they turned in a talent show form to me! Please be on time to pick your children up.
Kindergarten has been working very hard on learning new terminology for computer windows. They will use those terms when talking with me. They will also be able to understand those terms when asked to perform tasks on the computers.
First grade has been learning how to access their Google Classroom page. They are also learning about Google docs and how to format fonts. They have learned how to change their font, change the text color, change the text size and center. They will use all of these to create a poem for Groundhog's Day.
Second grade has mastered how to format their font in many different ways. The next activity will be to create a poem using all the different font formatting skills. They will also understand how to add images to their work and why and how to cite those images.
Third grade will review Google Classroom and begin learning how to create a Google Presentation. They will choose an animal and create a class zoo.
Fourth grade will be using a Google document and Google drawing to create an animal food chain project. They will use skills from their array project to complete the next activity. Students will research and learn how to cite information from the internet.
Fifth grade will be working on a nutritional activity. They will create a daily menu to include three healthy meals and two snacks. They will use the internet to research foods, find nutritional values for those foods and images. They will also be researching the correct amount of nutrients for their age to see if their menu would be appropriate for them.
